Earl Richard Rothermel, 81, of Blandon, passed away February 2, 2015 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
He was the husband of Ethel Irene (Kleinsmith) Rothermel, whom he married 61 years ago on May 16, 1953.
Born April 30, 1933 in Maidencreek Township, he was a son of the late Arthur Hartline and Annie Mary (Angstadt) Rothermel.
He was a 1952 graduate of Muhlenberg High School.
Earl was employed for several years as a salesman for Glidden Paint, Pottstown. He was later employed as an insurance agent for John Hancock Insurance Co., Wyomissing, for 31 years, until 1988; then as a judicial coordinator for Judge Arthur Grim at the Berks County Courthouse for 11 years; and last as a county court clerk before retiring in 2014.
He was a member of Maidencreek Church, where he was on the choir and served on Church council, board and many committees.
Earl also served for over 30 years on the Maidencreek Water Authority, where he was also a key contributor to its development up until the present. He was the past president, for 42 years, of the Rothermel Families of America Reunion; was a member of the Blandon Fire Company, Pike Township Sportsman's Relief Association, and Blandon Lions Club, where he also served as past treasurer.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.
Earl enjoyed planning social events such as reunions, dinners, parties and church functions. He loved tending to his fruit trees, chickens, lawn, garden and helping as a tax preparer. He will be dearly missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his nieces and nephews: Kenneth, II (Cathy) Shappell; Mike (Tammy) Shappell; Steve (Ninette) Shappell; Robin (Kathryn Hendricks) Shappell; Paulette (Mike) Pollock; Kathy (Tom) Gilmore; John (Cindy) Rothenberger; Janice (Michael) DeLay; Ronald (Mario Ferretti) Kazmierczak; Pete (Debbie) Kazmierczak; William (Debbie) Kazmierczak; Brenda (James) Evans; Dale (Michelle) Shade and several great nieces and nephews. Three sister-in-laws: Erma (Walter) Kazmierczak; Ruth (Gerald) Shade and Joan (Roy) Rothenberger, also survive him.
Earl was predeceased by his siblings: Harry, Stewart, Ralph, Arthur, Harold, Forrest, and Anna Mae Shappell.
He was also predeceased by his niece, Delaine Seidt, his nephew, Artie Rothermel, and his sister-in-law, Jean Burggraf.
Services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Maidencreek Church, 261 Main St., Blandon, PA 19510. A viewing will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in Maidencreek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Maidencreek Church, at the above address. Kuhn-Stitzel Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., Laureldale, is in charge of arrangements.
