E. Irene Schmidt

E. Irene Schmidt, 93, of Spring Township, died January 25, 2009 at 2:00 am in Berks Heim, Bern Township, where she had been a resident since November 7, 2008.

She was the widow of Walter Ludwig Schmidt, Jr., who died November 19, 1997.

Born November 27, 1915 in West Hazleton, PA., she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Anna (Herbst) Stong.

She was a 1937 graduate of Penn State University, with a B.A. in education.

E. Irene was also a past treasurer and chairman of the book sale for the American Association of University Women.

She was employed 11 years as a medical librarian with The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, retiring in 1975.

E. Irene was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two children: David W., husband of Mary Ann (Schlottman) Schmidt of Macungie and Sally I. Schmidt of West Reading.

Other survivors include a grandson; Brian D., husband of Chris (Pickell) Schmidt of Wallingford, PA and a great grandson, Benjamin B. Schmidt of Wallingford.
