Dororthy M. Protheroe, 98, died January 31, 2011 in Phoebe Berks Village, where she resided for 16 years. Her husband, William T. Protheroe, died December 31, 1993.
Born in Shamokin she was a daughter of the late John and Lillian (Evans) Simmers.
She was a graduate of Shamokin High School.
Dorothy was employed by Bell Telephone, Shamokin and later was the office manager for R.M. Palmer Co., West Reading from 1949 until her retirement in 1966.
She was a member of St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, Douglassville, and formerly of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Harrisburg, where she was active in the Episcopal Church of Women. Dorothy was also a member of the Harrisburg Women's Club.
A longtime volunteer for the Harrisburg Hospital Auxiliary, she also gave of her time to the Phoebe Berks Auxiliary.
She is survived by her three children, Thomas E., husband of Susan, Great Barrington, MA; William C., husband of Popi, Birdsboro; and Carol P., wife of Ian Young, Fleetwood. There is one sister-in-law, Mrs. Raymond Simmers, Harrisburg. Nine grandchildren: David Protheroe, Glastonbury CT; Eric Heathershaw, Lincoln Park; Carolyn Stewart, Great Barrington, MA; Jennifer Protheroe, Reading; Robert Protheroe, Reading; Aimee Rentschler, Reading; Olivia Protheroe, Birdsboro; Emily Nichols, Swedesboro, NJ; Millicent Protheroe, Philadelphia and 16 great-grandchildren also survive her.
Dorothy was predeceased by four siblings, Raymond Simmers, Lillian Shurgala, Walter Simmers and Elizabeth Yost, and one great-grandson Cameron Protheroe.
Services will be postponed due to weather on Saturday. The service has been rescheduled for Sunday, Febraury 6 at 2 p.m. with a viewing to be held one hour prior to service in St. Gabriel's Church, 1188 Ben Franklin Hwy E. (Rte. 422), Douglassville, PA 19518-1803. A service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
