Dorothy E. Merkel

Dorothy E. Merkel, 89, of Wyomissing, passed away on April 1, 2025, at Reading Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Her husband, Donald A. Merkel, passed away on October 16, 2023. They were married on November 3, 1956.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Catherine (Walters) Neiman.

Dorothy was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. She was employed by the Bank of PA for many years retiring from their Wyomissing branch as their head teller.

A Phillies and Penn State football fan, she also enjoyed shopping with her friends and family. She loved travel adventures. Animals held a special place in her heart with cats being her absolute favorite. Above all else she loved her family and cherished all of the moments she had with them; they were her pride and joy.

She is survived by her children: Brad H. (Mary) Merkel, State College; Karen L. (Jay) Schmehl, Shillington; and Donna L. Merkel (Joe Molony), Coatesville; sister, Louise, Robesonia; four grandchildren: Justine, Callie, Austin, and Catherine; and great-grandson, Brady.

Dorothy was predeceased by three siblings: Charlie, George, and Betty.

A visitation will be held on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. with a service to begin at 2 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to 1 by1 Cat Rescue www.1by1catrescue.org. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
