Dorothy S. Bankes, 83, of Wescosville, passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Lehigh Valley Hospital Muhlenberg, with her loving family by her side. Born in Perry Township, Berks County, she was the daughter of James A. and Edna M. (Sunday) Schappell, and was the widow of William I. Bankes to whom she was married for 41 years. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Trexlertown. Dorothy was a graduate of Perry High School and Reading Business Institute, and worked as a secretary at Pomeroy's Department Store in Reading before becoming a homemaker. She was a lifelong animal lover and supporter of animal rights causes, and provided many cats in need of a good home with care and affection over the years. She loved to feed and watch the birds in her backyard, and had a particular fondness for chickadees. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her many house plants, and had an admirable green thumb. She was an avid reader, and especially liked biographies. Her children will be forever grateful that she instilled a respect and love for animals and nature in them. Survivors: Loving son, Ronald W. and his wife Kathleen of Bethlehem; loving daughter, Marjorie M. McKensie and her husband Douglas of Newport, PA; four grandchildren, Justin Schurawlow and his wife Jennifer, Jeremy Schurawlow, Jessica Treskolaski, and James Treskolaski and his wife Rebecca; one great-grandson, Lincoln James Treskolaski; brother Franklin G. Schappell and his wife Ruth. She was predeceased by loving daughter Nancy D. Treskolaski. Services: Private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements by Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Inc., Hamburg, with burial at Zion WC Cemetery.
