Doris Funk Cosgrove was born on November 14, 1924 in Reading, PA. Growing up in the family of Dr. Erwin D. and Estelle Funk, Doris developed an early respect for health values, influencing her career path. She began her professional education at Penn State University, graduating with a B.S. in Institutional Management in the school of Home Economics in 1945. She interned with the American Dietetic Association at Boston's Women's Educational and Industrial Union. Within a year, Doris was chosen as the Assistant Director which included teaching at Simmons College. She went on to complete an M.A. in Nutrition and Biochemistry from Drexel University in 1968.
Doris began as a clinical dietician at St. Luke's Hospital before becoming a faculty advisor and nutrition instructor at Easton Hospital School of Nursing. In 1972, she was awarded a federal traineeship which allowed her to complete her advanced studies with a Masters of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Doris continued her service to others when she accepted a position at the PA Health Department where she rose to be a nutrition consultant for the Eastern District.
Doris married C. William Freed Jr. in 1947 and was the mother of two children. That marriage ended in divorce and she was married to the late Lee A. Cosgrove from 1978 until his death in 2000.
Doris was blessed with many lifelong friendships. She enjoyed playing golf, table tennis, and bridge for most of her life in addition to being an avid gardener. She will be dearly missed by both her family and friends.
At the age of 96, Doris passed away peacefully at the Highlands of Wyomissing on November 1, 2021.
Doris is survived by her children C. William Freed III of Guatemala and Kathleen F. Freed of Devon, PA, five grandchildren: Hannah Freed, Jessica Freed, Rebecca Freed, Thomas Gillean and Hannah Gillean and four great grandchildren. Additionally, Doris will be remembered fondly by her many nieces and nephews as the "fun aunt" of the family.
