Doris Burkot

Sister Mary Doris Burkot, of the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, died on Wednesday morning, November 9, 2022 of natural causes at St. Joseph Villa, Reading, PA, where she had resided since 2017.

Born in Middleport, PA, she was the daughter of the late Leon M. and Apolinaria "Pauline" (Wrzos) Burkot.

Sister Mary Doris entered the Bernardine Sister congregation on August 11, 1948, and was in her 74th year of religious life. Sister earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Villanova University, Villanova, PA and a Master in Education from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA and a Doctorate degree in Higher Education from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. She served her ministry in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Liberia, West Africa as an Elementary, reading clinic, and college teacher; group mother, superior, education center directress, instructor, Coordinator Title I program, tutor, receptionist, office assistant, researcher, Secretary to Papal Nuncio, researcher and archivist for the cause of Rev. Walter Ciszek, S.J., and hospitality staff at a Retreat House.

Sister is survived by her sister, Gertrude ("Trudy") Mickey, Allentown, PA.

A viewing will be held at St. Joseph Villa, Reading, PA on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at 2:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, Reading, PA. Burial will follow in the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters cemetery, Mount Alvernia, Reading, PA.
