Donald Arlan Shollenberger

Donald Arlan Shollenberger, formerly of Hamburg, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2016 shortly after celebrating his 87th birthday in Atria Woodbridge Place, Kimberton. Born in Hamburg, he was the son of the late Arlan and Lala (Bailey) Shollenberger. Don worked for Hamburg Broom Works, Hamburg and Burroughs/Unisys, Downingtown along with several part-time jobs throughout his working days. He served in the US Army as a medic in the Korean War. He loved baseball, especially the Phillies, cars, and ice cream. Donald loved his cars and he loved to drive! Across town, across the country, to playgrounds, miniature golf courses, amusement parks, practices, games, weekend junior bowling league, college dorms, to a ballgame, and any place that served ice cream. He especially liked chocolate milk shakes and banana splits. Although dementia dampened his memory over the past several years his happy, kind, and warm personality stayed strong. Atria staff and residents all noted how quick he was to share pleasantries, a wide warm smile, or a laugh; "a sweet gentleman" who loved his ice cream. Don is survived by his ex-wife Janet L. (Miller) Groves, a son Jody A. Shollenberger, his wife Debbie, Schwenksville; a daughter Susan M. Shollenberger, her life partner Debra Bievenour, York; and nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; one sister Mae A. (Shollenberger), wife of Richard Kunkel, Kempton; and brother Leroy Shollenberger, and his wife Arlene, Bernville. He was predeceased by a daughter and two sons: Traci Jo; Randy Scott; and Jason Robert; one brother David Shollenberger; and a sister Gladys A. Arndt. Services will be held on Friday 15-Apr-2016 at 11:00 am at Burkey-Driscoll Funeral Home, 40 South 4th Street, Hamburg. A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Berks County Memorial Gardens, 201 Evansville Road, Fleetwood. In lieu of flowers, take the "kiddies" to a new playground, miniature golfing, hiking around Hawk Mountain and for ICE CREAM. Dad would like that more than anything.
