Donald R. Shannon, 77, formerly of West Lawn, died April 23, 2010 in Phoebe Berks.

His wife, Barbara A. (Sheidy) Shannon, died March 30, 2003.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late John J., Sr. and Marie E. (Gieringer) Shannon.

He attended Central Catholic High School.

Donald was a US Navy veteran serving during the Korean War.

Donald was employed by Reading Railroad as a brakeman and engineer. Later, he worked for 22 years as the Supervisor of Building and Grounds for Wilson School District, from April 1968 until his retirement in July 1991.

He was a member of St Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church.

Donald was past president of the Holy Name Society for St. Peter's Church, Reading, and past secretary for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.

An avid ballroom dancer, he was a student of both Louise Lamar and the Fred Astaire Dance Studio.

Donald is survived by four children, Monica A. Shannon, with whom he resided, Maureen "Pat", wife of Bill Walton, Exeter Township, Mark A., husband of Carol Shannon, Wernersville and Bridget M., wife of James Leary, Springfield, VA. There is one sister, Patricia, wife of Robert Strauss, Friendswood, TX. Six grandchildren, Christopher, Jeffrey, Lisa, Marybeth, Julie and Nicholas; and two great-grandchildren, Maleah and Liam also survive him.

Donald was predeceased by two brothers, John, Jr., and Bernard and his infant son, Matthew.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Ignatius Church, 2810 Saint Albans Drive Sinking Spring, PA 19608. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading.
