Donald Lee Helms

Donald Lee Helms, a visionary artist, designer, entrepreneur, and professional opportunist, passed away peacefully at Paoli Hospital on May 4, 2024, at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family. His legacy lives on through the family he built—an inspiring blend of artists, entrepreneurs, and hardworking individuals who reflect his influence and drive.

Born in 1935 in Reading, Pennsylvania, Don was the son of the late G. Russell Helms and Edna Marie Himmelberger. He grew up with a strong sense of curiosity and creativity, excelling in various fields during his time at Reading High School. Whether it was golf, basketball, or flirting with the attendance clerk when running in late, Donald made his mark.

After graduating high school, Don enlisted in the United States Navy. But, it wasn't long before he discovered his true calling in the world of design. His career began as a draftsman at Gilbert and Associates, followed by a role as a window display and case designer for Kay Jewelers, followed by Director of displays and fixtures at Boscov's. These experiences helped him develop a keen eye for design and the business insight that would later shape his entrepreneurial journey.

In 1968, Don founded Fleetwood Industries, Inc., a company that became a leader in the custom fixtures, furnishings and retail display industry. Under his leadership, Fleetwood not only thrived but also pioneered innovative solutions that were widely embraced by corporations and businesses across the world. Beyond his professional achievements, Don could be found playing golf or poker, enjoying the camaraderie of friends and family. His creative side also came to life in the most unlikely of places—neighborhood bars. There, he would sketch on napkins, perfecting his beloved character, Mr. Happy. Over the course of six decades, Mr. Happy embarked on countless adventures, eventually leading to the publication of Living Large with Mr. Happy, a collection of cartoons that reflected Don's unique sense of humor.

Don was a one-of-a-kind individual—talented, generous, and remarkably lucky in both life and love. His spirit, creativity, and unwavering dedication to those he cared about will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife Kim Helms and their two children Tyler Helms and Kaelee Helms and by his children Chrystal Hardinger, Darrell Helms (Carolyn), Mindy Gehris (John) and Stacy Helms from his previous marriage with Ruthann Cratil

Also survived by his grandchildren Jason Gehris, Brittny Gehris, Jarred Hardinger, Joshua Hardinger, Taylor Hardinger, Remi Helms, Hannah Gehris, Emma Gehris, and Maddy Helms

Also survived by his great-grandchildren Raycer Boyd, Jaxon Boyd, and Shelby Boyd
