Donald E. Hammes

Donald E. Hammes, 94, passed away at Berkshire Commons in Exeter on Friday, August 2, 2024.

He, his wife, and family lived in Green Hills, Robeson Township, for 52 years. Born in Darby, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Frederic and Ethel (Snyder) Hammes. Donald was a member of the Church of St. Benedict, Mohnton, as well as one of the founding families of the parish. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1947.

Prior to his retirement in 1996, Donald worked as a draftsman, estimator, and field supervisor for Berks Lehigh Glass Company in Reading, PA. He was proud of the home that he designed for his family, and enjoyed woodworking and building, the outdoors, reading, and volunteering at church, especially in the pits at the annual chicken BBQ. He was well-known among friends and family for his dry and pointed sense of humor.

Donald was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Mary M. (Harcar). He is survived by their children: Margaret M., wife of Walter Saylor, Mt. Penn; Joseph E., husband of Elisa B., Fleetwood; and Jennifer A., wife of Robert Miller, Mt Penn, as well as five grandchildren: Andrew and Matthew Saylor, Nathan Hammes, and Catherine and Gavin Miller.

Donald was also predeceased by his five siblings: Dorothy C., Eloise R., Frederic J., Marcella I. (Boland), and Frank E.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 12 PM in the Chapel of Resurrection at Gethsemane Cemetery, 3139 Kutztown Rd, Reading, PA 19605. Burial to follow.
