Donald E. Greth, 75, of Muhlenberg Township, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. He was the beloved husband of DiAnn (Rossiter) Greth, with whom he celebrated 54 years of marriage. He is also survived by their children: Christopher Greth, husband of Tina, of Reading; Matthew Greth, husband of Sasha, also of Reading; and Julie Greth Hicks, companion of Michael Young, of Lancaster. He was a cherished "GranDon" to his beloved grandchildren: Beckum, Logan, Katie and Lilliana and his furry grandbaby, Princess Cuervo.
Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Donnie was the son of the late Melvin and Betty (McClausland) Greth. A graduate of Fleetwood High School, Class of 1967, he went on to serve his country with honor and distinction in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, embodying a spirit of patriotism and quiet courage.
A master of his craft and man of unrelenting determination, he was the visionary founder and proprietor of Donald E. Greth Electrical Service. From 1974 until his well-earned retirement in 2024, he operated his business with unparalleled professionalism, integrity, and tireless dedication. Known affectionately as "Dr Don," he possessed a prodigious aptitude for repair and innovation. There was rarely a problem he could not solve with his gifted hands and analytical mind. His work ethic was exacting, his standards uncompromising; mediocrity simply had no place in his world.
In the early 1990s, Donnie channeled his extensive knowledge into education, becoming a teacher at the Reading Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center. There, he mentored aspiring tradespeople, instilling in them not only technical proficiency but also the virtues of discipline, precision, and pride in one's workmanship.
He possessed an extraordinary gift for forging connections, he rarely entered a space without encountering a familiar face. His unforgettable laugh and thick crown of striking white hair made him instantly recognizable. His presence was magnetic, his humor infectious, and his authenticity unmistakable.
An avid outdoorsman, he found solace and exhilaration in nature, particularly through his love of hunting. His lifelong passion for sports began in his youth as a race car driver at the storied Reading Fairgrounds and evolved into a deeply rooted commitment to youth sports. For many years, he dedicated himself to coaching soccer at Muhlenberg High School and for the Reading Berks Select Teams, leaving an indelible impact on countless young athletes.
Among Donnie's many roles in life, none brought him more joy than that of grandfather. He loved and adored his grandchildren with a fierce, unwavering tenderness. As "GranDon" he was a steady, comforting presence, offering unconditional love, boundless patience, and a twinkle of mischief in his eye that never failed to bring laughter. Whether cheering them on from the sidelines, sneaking them treats, or simply sitting beside them in quiet companionship, his devotion to his grandchildren was deeply felt and freely given. He delighted in their personalities, championed their dreams, and created a legacy of love that will remain etched in their hearts forever.
He is also survived by his brother, Leonard Greth, husband of MaryEllen, and his sister, Diana Sharman, widow of Robert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Melvin Greth Jr. and Robert Greth.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the BCTC Educational Foundation, where a scholarship is being established in Donnie's honor to support and inspire future electricians in their pursuit of the trade. Please send donations in honor of Donnie's memory to: BCTC Educational Foundation, 1057 County Welfare Road, Leesport, PA 19533.
