On Wednesday, July 21, 2021, Derek Lee Covey, beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew and grandson, passed away suddenly at the age of 32.
Derek was born on April 19, 1989, in Beckley, WV, to parents Dairen Covey and Vicki [Grant] Parks. While he spent time in various states throughout his life, Derek decided to make Pennsylvania his home in early 2018. Derek was taken in as one of their own by his loving Uncle Gary [Grant] and Aunt Vickie. After settling in, Derek was able to finally realize his dream of having his own trucking company. Along with the support of Uncle Gary, Covey Trucking LLC was founded, and they worked together until his passing.
Like many of us, Derek struggled to overcome obstacles in his life, but he always strove to better himself. He would greet everyone he met with a smile on his face, pulling them in with his boyish charm and southern accent, showing that he was as beautiful on the inside as he was handsome on the outside. He was loved by all, but none more so than his Momma, as he was admittedly a momma's boy and proud of it. And like her, he had a heart of gold and was always willing to help anyone in need.
Derek had a passion for speed, and it showed in his love of motorcycles, riding bikes of all kinds- both on the track and off as often as he could manage. As such, he was an avid member of the Pagoda Motorcycle Club, located in Exeter, PA, where he served as their Roadmaster. Derek also loved being outdoors and spending time with his nephews, Joseph and Jonathon [Gray], whenever possible. He also enjoyed spending time with his "sidekick," his cousin Lee Grant with whom he resided.
Derek was preceded in death by grandfathers, Darrell Grant and Jim Covey, as well as Baby Gray, child of his sibling. He is survived by a large extended family. Among those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Vicki [Grant] Parks and husband Greg Parks of Jonesville, VA; as well as his father, Dairen Covey, of S. Charleston, WV; a sister, Jessica [Covey] Williams, and husband Ben Williams, of Claremont, NC, along with nephews, Joseph and Jonathon Gray; a sister, Lora Covey of WV, along with nephew Mikhol Klein and nieces Crystal Klein and Cayley and Avah Kerlavage; his favorite Great-Uncle Bill "Buster" Grant and wife Pat of Wise, VA; grandmother Mary Acord and husband Robert of PA; his favorite grandmother, Janice "Granny" Covey, of WV; uncle Jimmy Covey and companion Connie; uncle Roy Covey and companion Christine; as well as Uncle Gary Grant and wife Vickie of Temple, PA, with whom he resided. Also left behind are an uncle, Darrell Grant, and aunts Michelle Nunn and Priscilla Perry, along with their spouses and many more cousins.
Derek's family will receive guests on Thursday, August 5, 2021, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Come as you are--ride your bikes, drive your trucks, wear your jeans and T-shirts with your work boots...come and help Derek's family celebrate his beautiful soul and amazing heart.
A Memorial Ride and Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the Pagoda Motorcycle Clubhouse, 441 Red Lane Rd, Birdsboro.
