Dennis L. Werner Sr., 81, of West Lawn, PA, passed away on October 18, 2026, at Reading Hospital in West Reading, PA.
He was the beloved husband of Linda L. Werner (Cramp), with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Known as "Denny" and affectionately as "Bubba," Dennis graduated from Governor Mifflin High School in Shillington, PA, in 1963 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Health from Penn State University in 1967.
Dennis grew up in Mohnton, PA, and throughout his life, he loved sharing stories with family and friends about the wonderful times and memorable experiences of growing up in "good old Mohnton." Those formative years helped shape the man he became, and his deep affection for his hometown remained with him throughout his life.
An accomplished athlete, Dennis participated in football, basketball, and baseball at Governor Mifflin High School. As a senior in 1963, he helped lead the baseball team to the Berks County championship and earned All-County honors as a pitcher. He was also a drummer in the Governor Mifflin High School band.
Following high school, Dennis continued his athletic career at Penn State as a member of the baseball team until an elbow injury curtailed his playing days. He subsequently achieved considerable success in collegiate and amateur handball. In 1967, he finished as the national runner-up in the NCAA handball tournament. He went on to enjoy a lengthy amateur handball career with the Reading YMCA Handball Team, winning numerous tournaments throughout the 1970s. Dennis was also an avid recreational basketball player, competing in numerous Berks County recreational leagues during his young adult years.
After graduating from Penn State, Dennis began his teaching career in the Kennett Square School District, where he taught physical education and health during the 1967-1968 school year.
In the fall of 1968, he began what would become a long and distinguished career teaching physical education and health at Schuylkill Valley High School, where he remained until his retirement in 1999.
During his tenure at Schuylkill Valley, Dennis coached an extraordinary variety of sports and teams, including junior high football; junior high boys' and girls' basketball; boys' and girls' junior high soccer; boys' and girls' varsity cross-country; girls' tennis; boys' and girls' club volleyball; varsity girls' basketball; varsity and junior varsity boys' basketball; and varsity boys' baseball. In total, he coached an impressive 69 seasons of athletics at Schuylkill Valley, demonstrating an exceptional commitment to his students and the school's athletic programs.
As head baseball coach, Dennis compiled 255 wins and led his team to the 1976 Berks County championship. As girls' basketball coach, he earned 121 wins and was named Berks County Coach of the Year in 1987. In 1975, he coached the first winning season in Schuylkill Valley boys' basketball history. He also established the school's soccer and volleyball programs and directed the Berks County Boys' and Girls' Volleyball Club Championships from 1976 through 1986. Under his direction, the boys' volleyball team captured the Berks County championship in 1982.
Dennis's influence extended far beyond the playing field. For 15 years, he served as the PYEA club advisor, earning several Pennsylvania state volunteer awards for directing student service and philanthropic projects. In 1979, he was honored as the Leesport Jaycees' Young Educator of the Year. He also founded the SODAA (Students Opposed to Drug and Alcohol Abuse) club, reflecting his commitment to guiding young people, encouraging responsible choices, and making a positive difference in their lives. In addition, Dennis served as Health and Physical Education Department Chair for 20 years and as Athletic Director for one school year.
Beyond his coaching and administrative responsibilities, Dennis served as a PIAA varsity basketball official from 1976 to 1982. His passion for the game continued long after his formal officiating career, as he officiated countless recreational league games throughout his retirement years in both Pennsylvania and Florida.
In recognition of his many athletic and coaching accomplishments, Dennis was inducted into the Berks County Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2017, Schuylkill Valley High School further honored his contributions with his induction into its Wall of Fame.
During the summers when he was not teaching, Dennis remained busy serving as Director of Sports for the Berks County Recreation Association. He also worked as a playground leader for Cumru Township and as pool manager for Bern Township, Leesport, and Flying Hills. His year-round involvement in athletics and recreation reflected a lifelong enthusiasm for sports and a desire to keep others active and engaged.
Above all, Dennis loved his family and friends, Penn State, Schuylkill Valley, and Mohnton. He was immensely proud of his three children and especially cherished his four grandchildren, Nicole, Kirsten, Sydney, and Chase, who were the center of his world. He also had a special love for his dogs, whom he affectionately considered his babies and welcomed as beloved members of the family.
In retirement, Dennis and Linda enjoyed traveling extensively together. Their adventures included dozens of cruises, trips throughout Europe, and numerous Penn State bowl trips. They also treasured the 20 years they spent as snowbirds in Stuart, Florida. Along with enjoying their retirement together, Dennis and Linda continued serving others by volunteering with the Diakon ministry, transporting elderly individuals to their appointments.
In addition to his wife, Linda, Dennis is survived by his three children: Dennis L. Werner Jr., husband of Karen Werner, of Mount Joy, PA; Lori K. Werner, of Sinking Spring, PA; and Jeffrey S. Werner, husband of Wendy Werner, of Sinking Spring, PA. He is also survived by his four beloved grandchildren, Nicole, Kirsten, Sydney, and Chase.
