Dr. David B. Rees Jr., 73, of Wyomissing, passed away suddenly on December 31, 2023.
He was the husband of Bonnie (Foulkrod) Rees. Last June, they celebrated 50 years of marriage in the company of their children, grandchildren, and friends.
Born in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late David B. and Ruth (McKnight) Rees.
Dave received a B.S. and a varsity letter in baseball from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1971, an M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine in 1975, and an MBA from Alvernia College in 2001.
Dr. Rees interned at Temple University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, and was a resident under Dr. John Lachman at the Temple University Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. During this time, he also worked at Shriners Children's Philadelphia.
He was a physician and associate professor at Temple University Hospital from 1981 to 1983. In 1983, he joined Orthopaedic Associates of Reading (OAR). He loved serving his community as an orthopaedic surgeon. Dr. Rees was a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and served in several leadership roles at Reading Hospital. These included Chief of Section of Orthopedic Surgery from 1995 to 2003, Credential Committee Chairman from 2000 to 2001, Vice President of the Medical Staff from 2001 to 2003, and President of the Medical Staff from 2004 to 2006. After his retirement from OAR in 2017, he joyfully served as the chief orthopedic consultant for his active grandchildren.
Dave had many interests and accomplishments outside of medicine. He was a founding father and grandmaster of the Reading Hash House Harriers running club (On-On). He loved sports, gardening, music, trivia, golden retrievers, and trains. He had an enormous music collection and was famous for making the perfect mix for any occasion, whether it was a playlist for the operating room, a dinner party, or an afternoon on the beach. Dave enjoyed many summer vacations spent at Aimhi Lodge in Maine with family and friends, where he could be found driving water skiers around Little Sebago Lake while listening to his favorite tunes. He loved starting his day at Dosie Dough with a cup of Earl Grey tea, chatting with friends new and old, and watching trains. In retirement, he built an HO scale model train set that is more impressive than words can describe. Dave had a remarkable zest for life, was full of energy, and brought fun to any situation or setting. Above all, his greatest joys were his children and grandchildren.
In addition to Bonnie, he is survived by his children: David B. Rees III (Amy), Liz Rees Giardino (Anthony), all of Atlanta, GA, and Becca Rees of Charleson, SC; grandchildren Jack, Molly, and Annie Rees, and Sophie and Emily Giardino; and siblings Jim, Bob, and Bruce Rees, and Eleanor Lehman.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shriners Children's Philadelphia via LovetotheRescue.org. Condolences may be expressed at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
