David L. Matthews, 87, of Wyomissing and formerly of West Reading died of natural causes July 25th in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center where he had been a patient since July 19th.
He was the husband of Sophie M. (Kalina) Matthews, a resident at Country Meadows, Wyomissing.
Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Samuel and Mary E. (DeLay) Matthews.
Matthews was a Special Agent for the FBI where he worked in field offices throughout the Midwest, New England and Upper New York State.
He also was a Credit Reporter for Dun and Bradstreet, Inc., Collection Manager, Credit Bureau of Reading and Berks County, District Manager Capital Blue Cross, Outside Retail Salesman and Residential Representative for UGI, retiring on May 1, 1984.
Matthews was a graduate of Reading High School in 1936 and attended West Chester State College. He graduated with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration from Albright College in 1948.
He was a pilot for the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon; Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with Battle Stars for Southern Philippines, Luzon, Western Pacific, Air-Combat Borneo and New Guinea.
Matthews was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, West Reading, where he served as an usher.
He was past president of Toastmasters of Reading; Past Commander for the Catholic War Veterans; a member of FBI Post #56, American Legion, and a graduate of Dale Carnegie Course in Effective Speaking.
Other survivors include one son, David L, Jr., widower of Theresa (Elliott) Matthews of Mesa, AZ and two daughters, Sheila A. Matthews of South Coventry, Chester County and Margaret M. (Matthews) wife of John H. Funk of Wyomissing.
There are also 3 grandchildren, Ryan Matthews and Andrew Matthews both of Mesa, AZ and Samuel Funk of Wyomissing.
Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:00 am in St. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church, Reading. Viewing will be Saturday 8:30 am - 9:30 am in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Entombment will be in Gethsemane Mausoleum, Muhlenberg Township. Contributions may be made to Sacred Heart R.C. Church, P.O.
