David Y. Bausher, 88, of Wyomissing, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024 at Columbia Cottages, Spring Township, surrounded by family. He was the husband of Michele M. (Sallade) Bausher. They shared over 44 wonderful years together.
Born in Wyomissing, he was the son of the late Earl F. and Emily Y. (Steubner) Bausher. David graduated from Wyomissing High School, class of 1954. He attended Albright College.
David proudly served in the United States Navy from 1954-1961 as a Fire Control Technician- Petty Officer 3rd Class.
David joined the Wyomissing Police Department in 1957. He served as a police officer and sergeant before being promoted to chief in 1974. He served the police department faithfully for 34 years before retiring in 1991 as the Chief of Police.
David volunteered his time at the Berks History Center and for the Borough of Wyomissing as the Mayor from 2015-2016. He was currently serving as a member of the Economic Development Committee.
David started with the Borough Wyomissing in the mid 1950's with the public work department. His service to Wyomissing spanned over 55 years. His institutional knowledge and passion for Wyomissing and its historic beginnings will be a forever gift. He was a train enthusiast and loved history of all eras.
David and Michele enjoyed traveling especially visiting Scottsdale, AZ where he and Michele later relocated after retirement. He particularly cherished the nature of wild flowers and the cactus of Scottsdale. He was drawn back to Wyomissing to assume the role of fire commissioner in 1992. He later became the borough manager in 1993 and held that post until retiring in 2006.
David was a past president of the Fraternal Order of Police of Berks County, the Berks County Chiefs of Police Association, and the Wyomissing Lions Club. David was a life member of the Wyomissing Fire Company, No.1, where he served as the fire chief from 1966- 1974.
Left to treasure his memory are his wife, Michele; son, Edward E. (Dawn) of New Egypt, NJ, step-son Jason M. Harbonic (Jasmine) of Lansdowne, PA; and daughter Susan L. (Bausher) Smith (Douglas) of Wyomissing; and step- daughter Heather E. Zimmerman of West Lawn; grandchildren Emily (Kevin) Kwedor, Rebecca, Derek, and Taylor (Brian) Boland.
David was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Theodore C. Bausher and Richard A. Bausher.
A Memorial Service will on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11:30 AM at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, PA 19611. The visitation will begin at 10:00 AM until the time of the service. The Reverend Dr. Quentin Wallace will be officiating.
