Danielle "Dee" Delehanty, 87, of Robeson Township, passed away peacefully after a lifelong battle with kidney disease surrounded by her loving husband and son in Promedica Toledo Hospital.
She was the beloved wife of David P. Delehanty, with whom she celebrated 53 years of marriage this past August.
Born in Rockford, IL, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Lucille (Ferraro) DeForest.
She was a devoted parishioner of the Church of St. Benedict and regularly attended Sunday mass.
Dee began her career as a bookkeeper for the Teamsters of Philadelphia. She later went on to begin training to be a flight attendant for Capitol International Airways, where she worked her way up to chief flight attendant. Following the birth of her son, Mark, she worked as a part-time night shift cashier at Giant Food Stores, eventually earning her way to the role of project manager. She played a vital role in the implementation of self-checkouts in various surrounding Giant grocery stores. In her retirement, she worked part-time for Hallmark stocking greetings cards in local grocery stores, pharmacies and post offices. She and her husband David also transported vehicles for Haldeman Ford of Kutztown, which afforded them the opportunity to travel all over the United States.
Dee was diagnosed with kidney disease early in her childhood, but she never allowed her diagnosis to hinder her from doing the things she enjoyed most, which included spending quality time with her family, cooking and entertaining, having lunch regularly with her friends from high school and work, gardening, camping and taking road trips with her husband. Throughout the course of her life, Dee also owned several dogs, as she was an avid dog lover and enjoyed their companionship.
She took pride in her role as a member of the school board in Lewistown, PA as well as the integral role she played as a flight attendant transporting troops in and out of Vietnam.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Mark Delehanty, husband of Cynthia S. Delehanty, Boyertown, and her step-children, Michael Delehanty, husband of Shannon Delehanty, Wildomar, CA, and Laura Delehanty, Kingston, NY. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Taylor Folk, wife of Justin Folk, Shillington, her two step-grandsons, Theoren Delehanty, husband of Ashley Delehanty, Lake Elsinore, CA, and Benjamin Delehanty, Wildomar, CA and her three great-grandchildren: Liam, Isaac, and Livinia. Additionally, she is survived by her brother Stanley "Stan" Ferraro, husband of Carol Ferraro, Warminster, PA, her sister, Lynnette "Lyn" Lehmann, widow of Richard Lehmann, Iron Mountain, MI, and her sister-in-law, Mary Messina, wife of Richard Messina, Burnt Hills, NY. Dee also had several nieces and nephews, both by marriage and lifelong friendships, whom she loved dearly. Lastly, she will be sorely missed by her loving cat, Peanut.
She was predeceased by her sister, Janelle "Jan" Shallenberger, Rockford, IL, and her brother Edward "Butch" Owens, Buffalo, NY.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 22, at 12 p.m. at the Church of St. Benedict, 2020 Chestnut Hill Rd., Mohnton, PA 19540.
Contributions in honor of Dee can be made to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County and/or the American Kidney Fund.
