Dr. Daniel A. Balkiewicz, 64, Wyomissing, died January 24, 2011. He was the husband of Dr. Elaine M. Balkiewicz. Dan and Elaine had celebrated 41 years of marriage.
Born in Shanandoah, PA, he was a son of the late Adam and Mary (Cieslukowski) Balkiewicz.
Dan was a graduate of Shenandoah Valley High School. He received his bachelor's degree in education from Penn State University, his master's degree from Kutztown University, and his doctorate in educational administration from Temple University. He was employed by Pottsville Area School District for 30 years and retired in 2005 as Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Army reserves for six years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother, Bernard Balkiewicz of Shenandoah; his parents-in-law Jean and Dan Saluta of Helendale, CA; his sister-in-law Donna Devine of Shenandoah, PA; his brothers-in-law Bill Saluta, husband of Stephany Saluta of Castle Rock, CO and Daniel Saluta, husband of Angie Saluta of LaQuinta, CA; and nephews Lee and Jason Eikszta.
A family gathering celebrating his life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Johns Hopkins University-Dr. Joseph Herman Research Fund and sent to Marie Jo Corry, Assoc. Director, One Charles Center Suite 223, 100 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.
