Conrad "Connie" J. Dettling, 75, of Lincoln Park, died Sunday at 1:40 p.m. in his residence.
He was the husband of Roberta "Bobbie" L. (Smith) Dettling.
Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Conrad and Mathilde (Sattler) Dettling.
Dettling was a 1949 graduate of Reading High School and a 1953 graduate of Albright College, Reading, where he received his B.S. in Chemistry.
He worked as a technical representative for Boyertown Packaging Service Corp./Hargro, retiring in 1996 after 35 years of service.
Dettling was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle, R.C.C., Shillington.
He was a second team all state selection in basketball during the 1948-49 season at Reading High School. He was also voted the Outstanding Male Athlete in 1949 at Reading High School.
Dettling played first base on the 1948 Gregg-Post Legion Baseball Team that won the State Championship.
In 1953 he played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals Organization, playing in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
He played both baseball and basketball at Albright College, serving as co-captain on the basketball team his senior season.
Dettling was an Associate Scout for the Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres and the Chicago White Sox for a total of 25 years. In 1998 he was the recepient of a Special Achievement Award for his outstanding service to both Amateur and Professional Baseball by the Middle Atlantic Major League Scouts Baseball Association.
After his retirement from Boyertown, he was a volunteer for Owls Sports Club, where he oversaw maintenance of Owls Field.
Dettling was inducted into the PA Sports Hall of Fame, Berks County Chapter in 1999. He was recognized for his baseball scouting career. He was also inducted into the U. S. American Legion Hall of Fame in 1996.
Surviving are two sons, Todd A., Charlotte, N.C. and Brian M., Portland, OR.
Other survivors include a sister, Lillian M. Dettling, Philadelphia, PA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. John Baptist de la Salle R.C.C.. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before the Mass at the church. Contributions may be made to The Owls Sports Club 2324 Monroe Avenue West Lawn, PA 19609 or to St. John's RCC 420 Holland Street Shillington, PA 19607. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading is in charge of arrangements.
