Christopher Alan Schorn, 59, of Reading, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023, in the care of Mifflin Center. Born in Reading to the late William J. Schorn and Sally F. Schorn (Cremins), he was the youngest of three children.
Christopher graduated from Reading Senior High School in 1981. After high school Chris enlisted in the United States Air Force. He studied at Chanute Air Force Base and served as an aircraft fuel systems specialist and was primarily responsible for overseeing F16 Fighting Falcons. He traveled to Germany (with the Air Force), Hawaii, and many states in the US.
For the last decade Chris worked as a security guard, retiring in 2019 due to illness.
In Chris's own words:
"I had a great childhood with great siblings, parents, cousins, and friends. Great times with friends Troy and Jeff.
One of my better decisions in life was to raise my right hand and join the United States Air Force while I was still in high school, I went to basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas followed by tech school training at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois.
While in tech school I received orders to spend four years in Arkansas at Little Rock Air Force Base, however a classmate of mine in the same career field was getting out on a medical emergency discharge and asked if I would like to swap orders with him and go to Hahn Air Base, West Germany, in his place - one of my better decisions in life.
As a young 18-year-old, I explored Europe through the military and also on my own whether it be trips or temporary duty to Turkey, England, Italy or ski trips to Austria or weekend trips to France and Munich for Octoberfest. Going to concerts, touring ancient castles along the Moselle River, drinking wine eating delicious food, attending wine festivals in small German towns during the wine harvest. Some of my favorite bars were right out the main gate, dating some of the Irish bar maids that came from Dublin to make a living.
I enjoyed walking back to base and getting a schnitzel sandwich with some pommes frites and mayo and orders of currywurst from a local food truck stand in Walters. Forty years and I still haven't found anything like - I guess you just had to be there. Many fond memories of dating pretty girls, be it Irish or German, falling in love over and over and getting my heart broken plenty of times.
After my two years working on the F4s and the first F-16 fighter jets in Europe as a fuel systems specialist, I rose to the rank of E2 airman first class. I was then given orders to Luke Air Force Base located in Phoenix, Arizona, which was number three on my dream sheet as they called it. I spent two more years stationed there having a lot of great memories and trips to LA, Las Vegas, trips in the desert tubing down the Salt River, partying at all the nightclubs and bars in Phoenix.
Good memories driving my 1976 Mustang Cobra 2 whenever it was roadworthy - half the time it was broke down just from being old and abused but it was a fun little car, fast as hell- I got stopped a lot of times by the police but every time left to go maybe because I had a military ID, looking back it was well appreciated.
I consider myself lucky to have a good family, good upbringing, a good life traveling the world, how I took a bus from Pennsylvania to California and back and saw most of the states. For years I was able to spend three to four weeks at a time each year in Hawaii, California or Texas, wherever my brother and my sister-in-law happened to be stationed. I also have great family, cousins who I grew up with and some I wish I had spent more time with.
I can't forget my best friend Jesse. We met each other playing soccer for opposing teams, rivals in junior high only to meet up again in high school in a science class sitting next to each other since the age of 14 or 15. At times we even lived in the same house."
Chris is fondly remembered for his generosity and kind heart, his sense of humor, and his love of the Philadelphia Flyers and the Minnesota Vikings. He was a dedicated son, brother, uncle, and delighted in the recent birth of his grandniece Hannah.
Chris's memory is treasured by his sister, Patti; his brother, Kevin, husband of Patti Dawn Schorn, of Hawaii; his niece Nicole, wife of Marc Nakasuji; his nephew, Jonathan and wife Sarah; and his many cousins and friends.
