Christopher J. Gibney, 73, passed away March 30, 2009 in his Wyomissing residence.
He was the husband of Patricia J. (O'Brien) Gibney. They were married on September 7, 1963 and celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last year.
Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Edward F. and Doris M. (Eckel) Gibney.
Christopher was a 1953 graduate of St. Peter's Reading Catholic High School and attended Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Gibney was employed for 32 years as a Systems Engineer for IBM, Reading, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, West Reading, where he was serving as the current president of the Sacred Heart Seniors and was their past treasurer; he was also a choir member from 1974 to 2008 and a long time cantor. Chris served as construction chair and crew member of the Holy Name Extravaganza from 1982 to 2006 and was a founding board member for Children's Alopecia Project since 2004.
Mr. Gibney is survived by three sons, Christopher, husband of Martee Gibney, Bettendorf, Iowa; Andrew, husband of Rebecca Gibney, Wyomissing and Jeremy, husband of Claire Gibney, Wyomissing; and three daughters, Rebecca, wife of David Jones, Douglassville; Elizabeth, wife of Jeffery Woytovich, Wyomissing and Patricia, wife of John Nierle, West Reading. He was predeceased by a son, Robert, in 1970.
Christopher is also survived by two brothers, Edward F., Jr., Allentown and David, Sr., husband of Mary Ann, Exeter Twp; and seven sisters, Margaret A., widow of Giles I. Brooks, Yardley; Marie S., wife of Edward Lynch, Temple; Rosemary, wife of John Ross, Reading; Gertrude A., widow of Nicholas Oliver, Exeter Twp.; Kathleen, wife of Charles Crowell, Brecknock Twp.; Dorothy Gibney, wife of Gerald Lawrey, Green Hills and Teresa, wife of Edward Hamilton, Chester County. A brother, Gerald V. Gibney, predeceased him.
Fourteen grandchildren: Taylor M. Gibney, Kyle R. Jones, Jacob C. Gibney, Gary E. Jones, Helena M. Woytovich, Madison G. Woytovich, Luke M. Gibney, Tanner S. Brugger, Sofia P. Woytovich, Amelia C. Woytovich, Noah S. Gibney, Farran M. Gibney, Mallaigh E. Gibney and Alise K. Nierle also survive him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Burial in Gethsemane Cemetery will be private.
