Chester Lloyd Longenecker, 84, of 109 Lauers Lane, Wyomissing, Pa 19610 was pronounced dead Monday at 5:22 p.m. by members of the Berks County Coroners Offices after he was struck by a vehicle in the 1300 block of Penn Ave., Wyomissing.
He was the husband of Jane E. (Stoudt) Longenecker.
Born in Reading, Pa., he was a son of the late Walter M. and Edna S. (Burkey) Longenecker.
He was a 1936 graduate of Reading High School and attended Wyomissing Polytechnical Institute.
Longenecker was a member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ, Reading, where he served as an Elder and Member of the Consistory.
He worked as a postal clerk and in the accounting department for the Reading Branch (5th & Court) of the United States Postal Service. He later worked for the Mount Penn Branch as a branch manager until August 1979.
Longenecker last worked as a courier for Boyd C. Wagner Associates of Reading for a number of years until his retirement.
He was a Army Veteran of WWII where he earned both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Longenecker was a life member of the Reading-Berks Basketball Old-Timers, Olivets Boys Club and the Monarch Athletic Association, all of Reading.
He was also a beneficial member of both the Schuylkill Fire Company, Reading and Goodwill Fire Company, Muhlenberg Township.
Longenecker is also survived by a daughter, Nan J. (Longenecker) wife of Rev. Robert McSurdy of Wyomissing and two sons, Chester L. husband of Joanne Longenecker of Charlotte, North Carolina and Bruce E. husband of Maureen Longenecker of Wyomissing.
Other survivors include a brother, Edward W. Longenecker of Victoria, Texas and four grandchildren; Thomas M. Longenecker, Andrew J. Longenecker, Jennifer L. (McSurdy) Cambria and Melissa L. McSurdy.
He was also predeceased by a sister, Catherine M. (Longenecker) Graves who died December 16, 1994.
Longenecker is also expecting his first great-grandchild in June 2003.
Services will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Viewing Friday evening 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Spring Township. Contributions may be made to St. Mark's United Church of Christ 218 West Greenwich Street Reading, Pa 19601.
