Charles C. Phillips, co-owned business Charles C. Phillips, 83, a retired Birdsboro furniture and appliance business owner, died Jan. 9 in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient for two days.
Phillips, Reading, was the husband of Mary (Avanzato) Phillips.
Born in Birdsboro, he was a son of the late Nicholas and Mary (D'Angelo) Phillips.
Phillips was president and co-owner of the former Phillips Bros. Furniture and Appliances, Birdsboro, from 1960 until his retirement in 1989. He was previously employed for 10 years by UGI Utilities Inc., Reading, where he won a salesman of the year award in 1957.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Reading, where he was a lector and eucharistic minister.
Phillips was a 1938 graduate of Birdsboro High School.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Phillips was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 793, Reading, and former chairman of the speaker's bureau and a Paul Harris Scholar for the Northeast Rotary Club, Reading.
He served 26 years as captain of the Queen of Peace Retreat Group for the St. Francis Retreat House, Easton, Northampton County.
Phillips is also survived by a son, Charles J., Sinking Spring, and a daughter, Maria L. (Phillips) Kreider, Reading.
Other survivors include a brother, Nicholas, Birdsboro.
There are also three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's RC Church. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale. Friends may call from 6- 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to St. Joseph's R.C. Memorial Fund 1018 N. 8th Street Reading, Pa 19604. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
