Charles W. Gring

Charles (Chuck) W. Gring, 77, passed away on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023 at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center in Reading. He was the loving husband of Gwenlyn (Thornburg) Gring, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.

Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Irvin and Alice (Schwartz) Gring. After graduating Reading High School (Class of 1963), Charles enlisted in the Army and served two tours in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart. After active duty, he served in the Army Reserves. He married Gwen, the love of his life, on June 24, 1967. He worked in maintenance for the Reading School District and the Owen J. Roberts School District until his retirement.

Chuck was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan who loved to watch old cowboy movies. Family trips to Wildwood, NJ were an annual highlight for the whole family.

Left to cherish those memories are his wife, Gwen; daughters, Kristie (Gring) Rapp, wife of Steven Rapp of Blandon and Charlyn Gring of Shillington; grandson, Zackary Rapp, husband of Rhapsody (Heller) Rapp of Reading; and granddaughters, Karlee and Emma Rapp of Blandon.

He was predeceased by a brother, Irvin Gring, Jr., and sisters: Fern Tregea, Barbara Knappenberger, and Betty Lou Eckert.

Services will be held on Monday, June 19th, 2023 at 11:00 am in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc. 739 Penn Avenue West Reading, PA 19611. Friends and family are invited to gather at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Wyomissing Cemetery in Gouglersville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
