Charles E. Goodling, a retired assistant executive director of the Berks County Intermediate Unit, died Feb. 17 at 6:40 p.m. in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient since Jan. 28.

Goodling, 80, Spring Township, was the husband of Phyllis L. (Klucker) Goodling.

He started with the IU in 1966 as planning director for Title III of the Elementary-Secondary Education Act and in 1969 was named an education specialist.

In 1973, Goodling was named an assistant executive director for planning and development, research, evaluation and federal programs. He retired from that position Oct. 2, 1981.

Born in Hershey, Dauphin County, he was a son of the late Benjamin F. and Sarah J. (Wagner) Goodling.

Goodling taught at Biglerville (Adams County) High School in 1950 where he also coached football and basketball. From 1951 to 1954, he taught business at Muhlenberg High School, where he was also the jayvee basketball coach.

In addition, he taught business at Exeter High School in 1954, where he also coached basketball. He taught at Wyomissing High School before going to the IU in 1966.

Goodling was a 1942 graduate of West York High School and a 1949 graduate of Shippensburg University with a bachelor's degree in education.

He was a 1952 graduate of Temple University, Philadelphia, with a master's degree in education and received his doctorate in education from Nova University, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 1975.

Goodling was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn, where he was an usher, volunteer for Safe Haven, former councilman and Sunday school teacher.

He was one of the founders of the men's group at Advent.

Goodling was a former board member of Greater Reading Area Involved Lutherans.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Goodling is also survived by a son, Stephen S., Reading; and a daughter, Susan C. Goodling, Spring Township.

Other survivors include three grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Advent Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Hain's Church Cemetery, Lower Heidelberg Township. Friends may call Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Advent Lutheran Church, 16 Telford Avenue, West Lawn, PA 19609 or the American Cancer Society, 498 Bellevue Avenue, Reading, PA 19605 or the American Heart Association, 212 E. Broad Street, Bethlehem, PA 18018. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
