Charles J. Brubaker, 86, died July 11, 2010 at his Mohnton residence.

He was the widower of Constance A. (Ritz) Brubaker.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Charles R. and Ethel (Henninger) Brubaker.

Charles was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School.

He was a supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement.

Charles was very active in community service. He volunteered at Reading Hospital for over 30 years; for nearly 14 of those years he dressed as the rag doll, Raggedy Andy and visited patients. He performed as tenor with the Horizon Singers and the Muhlenberg Community Chorus. He also played saxophone with the Jack Kenny Orchestra, a big band ensemble.

He was a member of New Journey United Methodist Church, Reading.

Charles was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in WWII and during the Korean War. He was a diesel engineer aboard LST-511. He participated in Operation Tiger, a top secret training mission in April 1944. Charles was one of the Berks County WWII veterans featured in the book "Ordinary Heroes: Untold Stories of World War II" by Sharon Wells Wagner and Steve Wagner of Sinking Spring.

He is survived by his two children: Mark C., husband of Barbara (Hughes) Brubaker, Clifton Park, NY and Karen S., wife of Martin Brynildsen III, Bethlehem. Also surviving are two grandchildren: Kevin M., husband of Melissa Quinter, Wyomissing and Kelly L., wife of David Peterson, Wilmington NC and five great-grandchildren: Connor, Kaylee and Ainsley Quinter and Caleb and Connie Peterson.

Charles was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Neidert.

A Memorial Service will be Saturday, July 24, at 11 a.m. in New Journey United Methodist Church, 138 South 6th Street Reading.
