Charles E. Ashenfelter

Charles E. "Chuck" Ashenfelter, Jr., 68, of Alsace Township, died December 28th shortly after his motorcycle crashed on Fritztown Road in Spring Township.

Formerly of Reading, he was the husband of Dolores A. (Barbitta) Ashenfelter.

Born in Mt. Joy, Lancaster County, he was a son of the late Charles E. Sr., and Clare (Aston) Ashenfelter.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, West Reading where he was a lay pastor, choir member and served on church council.

Ashenfelter was a 1955 graduate of Donegal High School, Lancaster County and a graduate of Millersville University where he received his bachelor and master degrees.

He was an Air Force Veteran.

Ashenfelter was the captain of the Victor Emmanuel Bowling Team; volunteered for the six years at the Pa State Police, Camp Cadet program, Yellow House and was a active actor in the Ephrata Play House.

He was employed seven years as a teacher in the Paradise School District, Lancaster County.

Ashenfelter was later employed 19 years in Harrisburg by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Drug and Alcohol License Department, last working 1999.

He later worked part-time at the Berks County Court House as a tip staffer for the last four years; Cookies By Design of Sinking Spring as a baker and driver and the Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale as a funeral assistant.

Ashenfelter is also survived by a step-daughter, Kim D. (Bleiler) Petersen of West Lawn and a sister, Nancy C. (Ashenfelter) Sullivan of Camp Hill, Cumberland County.

Other survivors include two step-grandchildren, John E. Petersen of Shillington and Amber R. Petersen of West Lawn.

There is also a step great granddaughter, Liliana Petersen of Shillington.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 am in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale. Rev. Samuel R. Zeiser officiating. Viewing Monday 9:00 - 10:30 am in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, 336 Franklin Street, West Reading, Pa 19611.
