Catherine A. Reid

Catherine A. Reid, 95, formerly of Hampden Heights and of Phoebe Berks, died March 1, 2014, in Reading Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Her husband, Sumner W. Reid, died December 20, 2010.

Born in Palmerton, PA, she was the eldest daughter of the late Alfred O. and Elizabeth S. (Austin) Ashman.

Catherine was a 1936 graduate of Steven S. Palmer High School, Palmerton, and a 1940 graduate of Bucknell University.

She began her professional career as a medical technologist at York Hospital for ten years. Catherine then worked as a lab assistant at Albright College and later attended Kutztown University to become a certified teacher. For 17 years, she taught at Schuylkill Valley Bern School specializing in 5th and 6th grade math and science. She retired in 1980.

She was a member of Hains United Church of Christ, Wernersville.

Catherine and Sumner were avid paperweight collectors and were members of the National and Delaware Valley Chapters of the Paperweight Collectors Association.

They enjoyed travel, square dancing and genealogy research.

Catherine was the president of the PTA and a cub scout den mother at 13th and Union Elementary School.

Catherine is survived by two sons, Douglas O., husband of Claudia Reid, Wanaque, NJ; and Donald A., husband of Dorothy Reid, Turners Falls, MA; her daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" R. Roberts, Bridgeton, NJ; her sister, Dorothy Fackre, Cape Cod, MA; seven grandchildren: Brian, Melanie, Beth, Marnina, Vicki and Jeffrey also survive her. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Erin Roberts, her son-in-law, Stephen Roberts and her brother, Alfred O. Ashman Jr.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Phoebe Berks Chapel, 9 Reading Drive, Wernersville, PA 19565. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
