Carl Edward "Connie" Rothenberger, Sr., 95, of Hyde Park, died September 3, 2013 in Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
He was the husband of Jean Elizabeth (Ulle) Rothenberger who died September 9, 1993.
Born October 12, 1917 in Hyde Park, he was a son of the late Irvin and Gertrude E. (Heckman) Rothenberger.
Connie was employed as a bartender with Goodwill Beneficial Association, Hyde Park, for over 30 years. He also, in earlier years, assisted his father with carpentry work and building homes in the area.
He served in the U.S. Army, 3rd General Hospital during World War II in North Africa, Italy and France. He served at the Battle of Mt. Casino, Italy.
Connie was a member of First Baptist Church of Reading, and was active helping with the church and its soup kitchen.
He was an avid sports fan, especially for Philadelphia sports teams and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was active playing sports in his younger years, and was an excellent pool player.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was also a special friend to many and captivated his audience with his storytelling.
Surviving are his two children: Shirley J. Gensemer of Northampton, PA and Carl E., Jr., husband of Mary Cynthia (Brown) Rothenberger of Pittsburgh.
Other survivors include his brother, Arthur, widower of Mae (Gensemer) Rothenberger, Alsace Township.
In addition, there are five grandchildren surviving: Matthew Gensemer, Corey Gensemer, Joshua Rothenberger, Scott Rothenberger and Rebecca Rothenberger and many nieces and nephews.
Connie was predeceased by 13 brothers and sisters.
**NOTE SERVICE TIMES HAVE CHANGED*** Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Kuhn-Stitzel Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Township.
