Carel Willem Harmsen, Jr.

Carel Willem Harmsen, 78, of Reading, PA, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, surrounded by family and close friends.

Born in the Netherlands on August 31, 1947, Carel was an explorer of the world and of life. Always curious and always learning, Carel spent time in the Ivory Coast as an engineer for the Peace Corps before eventually moving his family to the United States in 1987 to lead the North American division of Grosfillex. True to his nature, he embraced American pastimes - quickly picking up golf and baseball, while maintaining his passion for sailing, soccer, and a good pilsner.

Carel’s proudest accomplishment by far was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife of nearly 50 years Inge Harmsen,a loving father and grandfather to his sons Jeroen Harmsen, wife Corey (Castner) Harmsen, and Pim Harmsen, wife Kim (Snyder) Harmsen, and his five grandchildren Emma Harmsen, Truman Harmsen, Henk Harmsen, Elle Harmsen and Evelyn Harmsen and loving brother to twin sister Liesbeth Thomas and brother Aad Harmsen. All survive him.

A man of great integrity, wisdom and intelligence, Carel was always quick to listen when one of his children or grandchildren needed guidance. In his own words, “As a patriarch I encourage: kindness, honesty, hard work and curiosity.” If you were lucky enough to join him in one of his many social clubs or were just an acquaintance he treated like an old friend, you got to experience the genuine interest and passion he put into every conversation.

Carel’s humor, passion for life, positive outlook and peaceful nature will be missed beyond measure. Cheers Carlos.
