Betty J. Knause, 96, formerly of Flying Hills, passed away December 29, 2021, at Country Meadows, Wyomissing, where she had resided since February 2018.
She was the widow of Francis H. Knause, who died September 13, 2010. They were married for 65 years.
Born in Tilden Township, she was a daughter of the late Herbert D. and Florence (Hix) Klopp.
She was a member of St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, Caernarvon Township.
Betty was a 1943 graduate of Hamburg High School. Following her marriage, she worked at the Hamburg Post Office and Leesport Bank. After moving to Shillington, she worked for the former Sears store in the Shillington Shopping Center. She served as a secretary in the office of Gov. Mifflin High School for 22 years, retiring in 1990.
She was an avid reader and traveled extensively with Francis throughout the United States, Caribbean, and Europe. She and her friend Violet Williams of New Zealand were pen pals for 70-plus years until Vi's passing. Betty was also a contributor to The Historical Review of Berks County in her later years. At Country Meadows, she participated in a number of activities and enjoyed being part of the Paper Dolls recyclers group.
Betty is survived by her son, Thomas F. Knause, and his wife, Donna Reed, of Reading, as well as her grandson Harry T.R. Knause, and his partner Samantha Robinson, also of Reading, and their son – Betty's treasured great-grandson, Hunter Thomas Knause.
Betty was predeceased by her parents and by her sister, Anna (Klopp) Faust.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Gethsemane Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, 3139 Kutztown Rd, Reading, PA 19605. Visitation prior to the service is private. Entombment will be at the cemetery mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to St. Benedict's RC Church, 2020 Chestnut Hill Road, Mohnton, PA 19540 or to the charity of your choice.
