Betty Jane Smith

Betty Jane (Selig) Smith, 87, of Muhlenberg Township, passed away August 2, 2014 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

Her husband, Paul Harold "Bud" Smith, died in 1982.

Born March 3, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Marcus Aurelius, and Margaret (Heffleger) Selig.

She was a 1945 graduate of Reading High School.

Betty worked in the Hospitality department of The Reading Hospital and Medical Center for 14 years.

She was a devout Christian and an active member of Rosedale U.C.C., Laureldale.

Betty was a member of the Reading Hospital Auxiliary, Berks Encore, and Silver Sneakers Exercise Club. She also enjoyed tennis, shuffle board, bocci ball, and playing cards. She loved spending time in the sun and trips to the beach. She was an outstanding cook, even when she experimented in the kitchen, and hosted Christmas for her family every year. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and her memory will be cherished.

She is survived by her three children: Russell Mark, husband of Joan Smith, Exeter Township; Sue Ellen, wife of Russell Sweigart, Temple; and Nancy Renee, wife of Donald Davis, Pittsburgh. Also surviving are her brother, Richard A. Selig, Sinking Spring; and her five grandchildren: Andrea Lynn Farrell, Amy Nicole Callahan, Katie Sue Grosso, Donald Alex Davis, and Andrew Paul Davis.

Betty was predeceased by her brother, Kenneth A. Selig.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Kuhn Stitzel Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
