Betty L. Hottenstein

Betty Lee Heavener Hottenstein, 96, formerly of Wyomissing, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024, in the care of the Highlands. She was the widow of Elmer Robert Hottenstein, who passed away on November 5, 2021.

Born in Peterstown, WV, to the late Lacy Dean and Kathryn (Ruddell) Heavener, Betty grew up on her father's 150-acre farm in Gap Mills, WV.

Betty graduated as Valedictorian from Central High School of Hopewell Township in Pennington, NJ. She went on to complete her bachelor's degree in Music with a minor in English at Beaver College, now known as Arcadia University, and graduated from Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN with her masters of Library Science.

She spent a year teaching the children of the American staff of the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company in Camp Aaco, Venezuela. She went on to serve as a librarian at: Greenbrier College for Women, Lewisburg, WV; West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV; East Carolina College, NC; Post Liberty, Fort Jackson, SC; Roanoke, VA; and the State Library of Trenton, NJ.

Betty and Bob were very well traveled. She accompanied him on trips to China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and a grand tour of Europe. Betty held a life-long interest in genealogy, and she spent several trips in Salt Lake City reviewing genealogical records as well as time spent in Germany reviewing family records. A gifted pianist, Betty served as a past president of the Women's Committee of the Reading Symphony.

Left to treasure Betty's memory are her nieces and nephew, Eileen Cirulli, Marlene Adams, and Mark Ulrich. In addition to her parents and her husband, Bob, Betty was predeceased by her brother, James D. Heavener, and her sisters-in-law, Una Heavener, Mary Ulrich, and Anna Mae Hottenstein.

Services for Betty will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, with visitation starting at 3 p.m. She will be laid to rest in Carmel Cemetery in Gap Mills, WV.
