Bette L. Detterer

Long time Wyomissing resident, Bette L. Detterer, 88, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at home with her loving husband by her side. Bette and William Detterer were married in 1996 and shared 28 years of marriage.

Born in Great Falls, Montana, Bette was the daughter of the late Almond "Ray" and Opal "Bunny" (Smith) Raymond. She graduated from Great Falls High School in 1954 and went on to complete a Bachelors in Education at the University of Montana. Bette's first teaching assignment was on a military base in Anchorage, Alaska. She transferred to a base in Okinawa, Japan for two years before returning stateside. Later, she settled in Wyomissing, and worked in the Reading School District's Lauers Park Elementary as a reading specialist for over 20 years. She retired in 1996.

Bette had a zest for life. She was the most loving, kind, warm-hearted person you could ever meet. She was known for greeting friends with a "Yoo-hoo!" She raised her son, Steve, as a single mother, devoting her life to making sure he was taken care of, and she did a great job.

In retirement, Bette and Bill, often accompanied by a wonderful group of friends, traveled the world. Always up for an adventure, Bette loved spreading her warmth and smiles around the globe. An especially memorable trip for Bette and Bill was driving across the country, visiting the National Parks, especially Glacier in Montana.

Bette was an active member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and a supporter of the Spring Township Library.

Bette is survived by her husband, Bill; son, Steven Michael Cannon and his wife, Georgia, of Fort Smith, AR; three loving grandchildren: Michael, Emma, and Drew Cannon, also of Fort Smith; stepson, Bill Detterer of Philadelphia and Anne Bomhardt of Tampa, FL. Also surviving is a niece, Jennifer Avis, and nephews: Steve, Mark, Patrick, and Chris Raymond. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Raymond.
