Barry Hayden Palmer

Dr. Barry H. Palmer, 78, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024. He was the husband of Jenny B. Walker-Palmer.

Born in New York City on September 21, 1946, he was the first born child of Hayden C. and June A. (Wolfe) Palmer.

Barry was a 1965 graduate of Easton High School and a 1969 graduate of Elizabethtown College. He received his Master's degree from the College of New Jersey and his Doctorate degree from Temple University.

Dr. Palmer's major life interests included human behavior, the natural world, philosophy, and travel. His major employers included Pocono Mountain Resorts, numerous school districts and colleges, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Reading Foundrymen's Association, and the Manufacturer's Association of Berks County.

He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Masonic Lodge #549 and the Scottish Rite of Reading.

Dr. Palmer loved community volunteer leadership: Boy Scouts, Office of Aging, Goodwill, Literary Council, and numerous community fundraising efforts. He also served the Hopi Indian Nation in Arizona (via Central Conference of the Mennonite Church), and as a Rotary Ambassador of Peace and Goodwill in Yorbaland, Nigeria, Africa. Other service efforts include Kiwanis, Seoma, and President of the West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club. He was a member of the Wyomissing Church of the Brethren and the Elizabethtown College Peace Fellowship.

Other activities include two local television shows for 17 years: "Bring Light into the Everyday World" and "Horticulturally Yours." He was an active member of two Anthropology Chapters, Horticulture Clubs, and had an extensive career in public speaking. He also built an old style log cabin in Central Maine. He loved the north woods and Nova Scotia. In his youth he summered at Seaside Park, NJ and Lake Wallenpaupack.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Palmer is survived by his son, David Chapman Palmer and wife Kelly, and grandson, Emerson Hayden Palmer of Chicago.

A remembrance will be observed by family and friends on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Epler's Church Cemetery, 1151 W Leesport Rd, Leesport, PA 19533. Family and friends may gather at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Avenue West Reading between 10:15-10:30 a.m. in order to participate in the procession to the cemetery.
