Barbara A. Mengel

Barbara A. Mengel, 74, of Shoemakersville, passed away in her residence on Sunday evening surrounded by her family. Born in Perry Township on March 10, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Eva (Balthaser) and James M. Yeager. She was a member of the last graduating class from Perry High School and also, attended Reading Hospital Nursing School for two years and Kutztown University. Barbara was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Church Council for several years. She was very active in many of the church activities and also supplied flowers for the Church Bazaar. She worked at BCIU as a teacher's aide for 13 years, retiring in 1987. Barbara was a volunteer tour guide for the Reading Historical Society. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, quilting, and antiquing for over 40 years with her husband, James. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters: Ruth Frederick, Dorothy Schappell, Kathryn Hartman, and Arlene Burns and brothers: Curtis and Russell Yeager. Barbara is survived by her husband, James, to whom she was married 54 years; sons: Steven C. Mengel, husband of Arlene F., of Hamburg; Brian J. Mengel, husband of Tracy L., of Kutztown; Chris A. Mengel, husband of Karen L., of Mohrsville; grandchildren: Cathleen, Shelby, Madison, Kyleigh, Heather, and Luke; great granddaughter, Graceann; sisters: Grace Yeager and Mary Jane Scheidt. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 31st , at 11:00 a.m. in Zion's Evangelical Church, 354 Zion's Church Rd., Shoemakersville, with Rev. Bruce Osterhout officiating. A viewing will be held from 9-11:00 a.m. in the church. Interment will follow in Zion's Cemetery, Windsor Castle.
