Barbara Jane McBurney, 89, of Wyomissing, passed away March 3, 2014 in The Highlands at Wyomissing.
She was the widow of Norman McBurney.
Born April 17, 1924 in Ithaca, NY, she was a daughter of the late John R. and Florence (English) Powell.
She was an avid student and at the age of 64 she earned both an associate's and bachelor's degree in social work.
Barbara was an assistant postmaster for the Warren, NH Post Office, for 15 years, retiring in 1996.
She was a woman of faith and was always active in her local church, Gateway Alliance Church, Plymouth, NH, where she was the financial secretary and also taught bible school for several years. While in PA, she attended Atonement Lutheran Church as an "honorary member", with her daughter, Lois.
Barbara enjoyed reading, learning, singing, cooking, and baking. Her specialties were apple pie and "mom's meatloaf", which always sold out at the local stores in Plymouth, NH. She was also involved with the ladies auxiliary with the fire department in Long Island, NY. At the Highlands at Wyomissing, she loved involving herself in the daily activities. In the short time she was there she played bocci ball for the first time and ended up winning the championship game. She was known for her smile and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her four children: Dennis A., husband of Cathy Winchester, New Port Richey FL; Lois, wife of Dr. Edward Hein, Wyomissing; Warren, husband of Susan Winchester, Madison, WI; and Dorothy McBurney, wife of Roger Champagne, Hebron, NH. Also surviving are her three grandchildren: Trisha, wife of Todd Smith, Collegeville, PA; Amy, wife of Steven Dunman, Atlanta, GA; Beth Nelson, Atlanta, GA; and four great-grandchildren: Tyler Smith, Grant Smith, Kailey Smith, and Crosby Dunman. Two step-children: Sandra, wife of Donald Bilicki, Miller Place, NY; Norman "Butch" McBurney, Kings Park. NY; and a step-daughter-in-law, Edie McBurney, NC also survive her, along with their families.
Barbara was predeceased by her siblings: John Powell and Gwendolyn Cretser; and her step-son, Bruce McBurney.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will be private in Blair Cemetery, Campton, NH. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gateway Alliance Church, 9 Fairgrounds Rd, Plymouth, NH 03264. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading is in charge of arrangements.
