Barbara Cushman (Newhall) Newlin died peacefully on May 13 at the age of 84 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, after a long illness.
Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, on July 3, 1922, to William Price and Edith (Kurtz) Newhall,she attended Springside School from which she graduated in 1940. While at Springside, Mrs. Newlin starred in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. After her graduation she went on to be named to four All-American field hockey teams. She also excelled in racquet sports, winning the national squash racquets womens' doubles championships in 1954 and 1955 with her partner Louisa Manly-Power. She competed at the national level in tennis, playing in several Pennsylvania State Grass Court Championships as well as at Forest Hills. Mrs Newlin was inducted into the Berks County Tennis Hall of Fame, having won the womens' county singles' championships for many years. She played interclub tennis well into her 70's.
Mrs Newlin was an accomplished pianist, having studied at the Curtis Institute, was a lover of classical music and art, and was actively involved in a number of Berks County organizations, including Friends of The Reading Museum, the Hospitals' Thrift Shop, The Friday Club, the Schuylkill River Greenway, The Berks County Tennis Club, and at Christ Episcopal Church, where she served on the vestry and hospitality committees. She was a dog lover whose passion for canines ranged from schnauzers to dachschunds to cocker spaniels to Jack Russell terriers.
Her marriage to John E. Newlin, Jr. spanned 64 wonderful years until he predeceased her in February of this year. She is survived by her three children: John E. Newlin, III, of Wilmington, Delaware, Paul K. Newlin,of West Whately, Massachusetts; and E. Noel Newlin Yates, of Guerneville, California; their spouses; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving her is one brother, Paul K. Newhall, of Naples, Florida.
A Memorial Service celebrating her life will take place at Christ Episcopal Church, in Reading, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday May 16 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Christ Episcopal Church or the Reading Museum.
