Athens Hatzas

Athens Hatzas, 76, of Bern Twp., died March 17, 2013, in the Reading Hospital.

She was the loving wife of Augustus "Gus" Hatzas; they were married on October 18, 1953.

Born in Abington, she was the daughter of the late Gustav and Victoria (Reesta) Mandolos.

She attended Reading High School and Bryland Institute of Beauty Culture.

Athens was the owner/operator of Athens Hatzas's Hair Salon for 32 years. She retired in 1987.

She was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Reading.

Athens was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and also enthusiastically embraced a party. She loved spending time with her family, especially at the beach. She adored her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Victoria A. Hatzas, wife of Jesus Vazquez, Reading and Athena E., wife of David Waligurski, Mohnton; one brother, James Mandolos, Wellington, FL; and three grandchildren, Elena Vazquez; and David and Nicholas Waligurski.

She was predeceased by two siblings, Gustav Mandolos and Helen V. Fournaris, both of Reading.

Services will be held on Friday, March 22, at 11 a.m. at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1001 E. Wyomissing Blvd., Reading, PA 19611. Burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Reading Public Library Foundation, 100 S. 5th Street, Reading, PA 19602 in honor of Athens's constant use of the library; or Sts.
