Arthur E. O'Neil, 80, passed away September 4, 2009 in his Spring Township residence surrounding by his loving family.
He was the husband of Geraldine D. (Gerbino) O'Neil.
Born in Franklin, he was a son of the late Alfred and Mary (Greene) O'Neil.
He was a 1947 graduate of Reading Catholic School.
Arthur was a member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church.
Arthur was a career military man, retiring in 1988. He was previously a recruiter for the PA. National Guard. Arthur was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War where he earned a ribbon for sharpshooting.
Arthur received a commendation from Governor Milton Shapp for his rescue missions in Berks County during Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Claudia, wife of Barry L. Walters, Sinking Spring and his sister, Eileen O'Neil, Reading; three grandchildren, Sherri Alvarez, Jennifer Jacobs and Jessica Walters and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, J. Barry O'Neil.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Ignatius R.C. Church, 2810 St. Albans Dr. Sinking Spring, PA 19608. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. in the church. Contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Berks County, 1801 N. 11th St., Reading, PA 19604. Edward J.
