Anthony R. "Mitch" Mitchell, 96, died May 6, 2011, in his Wyomissing residence.
His wife, Mary E. (Rinaldi) Mitchell died January 15, 2008.
Born in Clearfield, he was a son of the late Frank and Tindara (Spinella) Mitchell.
Mitch volunteered for the U.S. Army serving as a Sergeant in Patton's Third Army with the 773rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. During WWII, he was in continuous combat from shortly after D-Day, including the Battle of the Bulge, until the end of the war in May 1945.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church.
Mitch was the owner/operator of Mitchell's Service Station from 1933-1999. His first station was located on S. 5th Street, Reading for the first ten years of his career. After his military service, he relocated his business to Baumstown. In 1951 Anthony built his station at 401 Morgantown Rd. which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1999.
His life was his business and family.
In his later years Mitch spent his winters in FL, picked up golf and enjoyed beating his friends who had played all their lives.
Mitch is survived by two children, Florence T, wife of Harrison "Harry" Carey, Wyomissing and Anthony N. Mitchell, Westfield, N.J.; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Thelma Mitchell Behler and seven siblings, Genevieve, Nicholas, Christmas, Nancy, Rose, Joseph and Grace.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, 237 Franklin St., Reading, PA 19602. Entombment will be in Gethsemane Mausoleum. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Rosary Church at the above address or BVNA/Hospice, 1170 Berkshire Blvd., Wyomissing, PA 19610.
