Anthony F. "Tony" Horning, 76, of Temple passed away September 17 at 5:22 p.m., after a massive stroke, in the Reading Hospital where he had been a patient since September 5.
He was married November 22, 1951 to his wife Margie M. (Nagle) Horning.
Born in Lower Heidelberg Township, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Plainer) Horning.
Horning was with the Muhlenberg Township Police Department for 26 years, retiring in 1989. He served as president and financial secretary during his 28 1/2 years with the Fraternal Order of Police, Berks Lodge #71.
He was also a Muhlenberg Township District Justice and served as a Senior District Justice until his retirement in 2003. He was elected as a Muhlenberg Township Commissioner in 2003.
Tony served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.
He was a vice president of the Blandon Lions Club and a member of St. John's Blue Lodge #435 F. & A.M. He also was a beneficiary member of the Goodwill Fire Co., Hyde Park.
Mr. Horning was a member of the Department of Veteran's Affairs, Allentown, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Seniority Club at Reading Hospital, the Laureldale and Berks County Senior Citizens Clubs, Muhlenberg Ambulance Association, Muhlenberg Area Shooting Association, and the V.F.W. Home Association of Adamstown.
Anthony was a member of Alsace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hyde Park.
He was also an avid golfer.
Other survivors include one daughter Debra A. Horning, Temple and four sons: Andrew S. husband of Diane (Pannabecker) Horning of Leesport, David A. husband of Roxanne (Bortz) Horning of Muhlenberg Twp., Douglas E. husband of Carol (Fick) Horning of Fleetwood and Dean A. husband of Kelly (Smith) Horning of Temple. There are also eight grandchildren: Amy, Jed, Jerome Nowlin (Sarah), Michele, Michael, Troy, Eric, and Riley. There are also two great-grandchildren, Justice and Brian Nowlin and many nieces and nephews surviving him.
Masonic Services will begin Saturday at 11 a.m., with additional services to follow with Pastor Mark Brophy and Chaplain Douglas Didyoung presiding in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale. Burial will be Laureldale Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
