Anna G. Berkis, 80, passed away unexpectedly on September 3, 2021, in her Spring Twp. residence.
Taken too soon, she was the loving wife of Aivars "Ivy" O. Berkis; they were married on August 25, 1962. They recently celebrated their 59th Anniversary with an intimate family dinner. The happiness of that evening and the joy it brought to Anna will always be a cherished memory for her family. Anna and Ivy reflected often on what a blessed life they created together.
Born in Uniontown, KY, she was a daughter of the late James P. and Rhe (Mohler) Robinson.
She was a graduate of Wilson High School in 1958, where all of her children and grandchildren would follow in her footsteps. This was the start of Anna's instruction that her children would never be allowed to stray far from home. All of her children reside in Spring Township to this day.
Anna's first priority was being a wife and mother raising her three children and providing a loving and nurturing home. Anna was known for one of the cleanest homes in the neighborhood, working tirelessly to keep everything spick and span. She was known to vacuum her children's footprints away after they were tucked in bed for the evening. Because of her very clean ways, Anna's children presented her with a gold plated vacuum cleaner for her 60th birthday. Anna also worked alongside Ivy at the West Reading Drug Store for many years where she was the gift buyer and decorator.
Anna and Ivy were consummate hosts, for business and friends alike. Known for throwing some amazing parties over the years. She was looking forward to one more hoorah later this month, a Mexican themed party with friends and family.
Anna and Ivy were married in Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn. She later became a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing.
Lovingly named "Sarge" by her husband for the way she ran her household – the nickname stuck. Even her license plate said "AB Sarge". Her grandchildren affectionately called her Gammy as her first grandchild, Rachel, had the honor of naming her. Her impressive sense of style and her beautiful appearance, lead to her later nickname of "Damn Gam!" Anna enjoyed running in her younger years and was a member of the Reading Road Runners club. Anna and Ivy along with their son and wife, were active members of the Skyline Drive Corvette Club. They took several annual trips with this group. Anna was known to yell "rev it!" at the yearly Corvette event in Ocean City, Maryland during the parade. Anna enjoyed traveling with family and her husband. She experienced some wonderful places like New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Canada, the Caribbean Islands, and most recently, the trip of a lifetime - a three week first-class train excursion through Africa. She also enjoyed Cape May, NJ and visiting her daughter and son-in-law's home in southwest Florida. She loved her time at her "happy place," the family lake house on Blue Heron lake in the Poconos. Anna spent many holidays and cherished times with her family at the lake. She enjoyed happy hour drinks on the deck, bonfires by the lake, and an occasional shot of Fireball!
In addition to her husband she is survived by her children: Jennifer L. (Jay) Kemmerer; Todd A. (Angela) Berkis; and Denise A. (David) Boyer, all of Spring Twp. There are nine grandchildren: Rachel (Travis) Speelman and Jay Robert Kemmerer, Jr.; Amanda and Natalie Boyer; and Matthew, Lauren, Jared, Ryan, and Leah Berkis; and six great-grandchildren: Maximus, Paisley, Liam, Kayden, Jamesyn, and Lyla. Three sisters: Mary Catherine (James-dec.), St. Louis, MO; Patricia F. (Dale) Johnson, Spring Twp.; and Peggy Sue Robinson (fiancee of Ray Thomas), Douglassville also survive her.
Services will be Friday, September 10, 2021, at 3 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. A visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Animal Rescue League in Anna's memory. Condolences may be expressed at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
