Alphonso James Churchman was born to Hinia Churchman and Isabelle (Ferguson) Churchman in Reading, PA on April 6, 1940.
Alphonso was educated in the Reading School District and upon completion of studies he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served our nation proudly and valiantly until being honorably discharged. During his enlistment Alphonso received several accolades including the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. Alphonso married Lorine Mitchell on June 27, 1964 at Zion Baptist Church in Reading, PA. Two children were born from this union. Alphonso and Lorine were happily married for over 60 years until his passing. Alphonso was a devoted and hard-working family man. He started working at an early age and held positions at various companies including A&P Market, Sears & Roebuck, Acme Market, IBM, Waddell & Reed Inc, Wyomissing Financial Group, and retired as an independent financial consultant.
Alphonso was a people person that could shoot the breeze with just about anyone he met. He was known for his kind and gentle spirit and his unwavering dedication to educating people in the area of finance. He would always say "It's not what you make, it's what you do with what you make". Alphonso was a devoted husband, father, uncle, and grandfather who dedicated himself to his family's overall well-being. He cherished family outings, vacations and took pleasure in attending Little League World Series games in Williamsport, PA.
Alphonso James Churchman, 84, departed life on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at St. Joseph Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his Father Hinia Churchman, Mother Isabelle Churchman and sister Virginia Ancrum. He leaves to cherish his memory: wife Lorine M. Churchman of Leesport, PA, daughter Phyllis Churchman-Boyd (Henry) of Wilmington, DE, son James Alphonso Churchman of Mohnton, PA, granddaughter, Sydney Boyd of Chicago, IL; special cousins Debra Woodhouse-Brent of Chicago, IL, Linwood Woodhouse of Decatur, GA and a host of sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services will be held Monday October 28, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial to follow with Military Honors at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A viewing will be Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
