Aloysius Russell, Sr.

Aloysius A. "Al" Russell, Sr., 91, passed away July 19, 2021, in his South Carolina residence.

He was the widower of Rose Marie (Downey) Russell.

Born in Five Points, Pa., he was the son of the late Clayton and Mary (Russell) Strause.

Al was employed by the Reading Railroad and Conrail as a yardmaster. After retirement he became an avid golfer.

In 1955 Al was awarded both the Pennsylvania Secretary's award for Safe Thinking and the Carnegie Mellon Presidential Medal of Honor for saving the live of two year old William Mattson by sweeping him from the tracks of the train that he was conductor of.

Al served our nation proudly and valiantly in the U.S. Army serving both in World War II and the Korean war.

He is survived by three children: JoAnn Frantz, fiancée to Ronald Pickel, Port Royal, PA, Mary Ream, fiancée to Ronald Stahler, Jr., Tamaqua, PA and Aloysius Jr., husband of Marlene Russell, Conway, SC; two siblings, Charlotte Stoudt and Charles Strause; six grandchildren: Brian jr., husband of Kadie Reichardt, James Ream, George, husband of Katie Frantz, Joshua Ream, Ashley Russell, and Tyler Russell; and one great-grandson, Korbin Reichardt.

Al was predeceased by six siblings: Edward, Rita, Mary, William, Janet and Lamar.

Services will be Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 12 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading with burial to follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
