Allen E. Hopkins passed away on November 3, 2023 of natural causes.
Born December 1, 1951 in Reading, he was the son of the late Elenore V. Hopkins (Copeland) and Johnnie Merritt of Reading, PA. He attended the Reading Area School District and was a member of the 1966 North West Jr. High School Football Championship Team.
A Vietnam era Veteran, he served this country proudly for 17 years in the United States Army. He was an Airborne Paratrooper and served with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Also served with Company A, 3/5 Infantry Battalion (Moatengators), Fort Kobbe, Canal Zone Panama. Served with Signal Company 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, NC. Served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, and Combat Support Company of the 509th Infantry Airborne Combat Team, in Vicenza, Italy. Served with 82nd Airborne Division DMMC (Division Material Management Center), Fort Bragg, NC. Last served with the Service Battery 5th of the 8th Field Artillery Battery at Fort Bragg, NC.
He leaves behind a loving wife, Shirley M. Singleton-Hopkins of Wernersville, PA; daughters: Melissa A. Hopkins of Philadelphia, Michelle Lawrence of Millersville, Robin L. Balanciere of Converse, TX, Annalisa N. Hopkins of Fayetteville, NC; sons, Anthony O. Harris of Philadelphia and Larry R. John of Manhattan, NY; grandchildren who knew him as Pop Pop: Joseph Gilloway Jr., Evelise M. Hopkins, Alyssa V. Harris, Miranda Bacon, Mikhael Lawrence, Malkam Lawrence, Sabrina Jenkins, Anthony Harris, Mahogony Lawrence, Ian G. Balanciere and Evelyn M. Balanciere; great-grandchildren, Joseph Gilloway II, and Elijah S. Cook; loving sister, Idella L. Hopkins-George of Reading, who always cared for and loved him even when he didn't love himself; loving sister Pamela Boggs (Nelson) of Montgomery, Alabama; many nieces and nephews and an extended family that he loved dearly.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
