Alexander Hetman

Alexander Hetman Jr., 78, passed away December 2, 2009 in his Temple residence.

He was the husband of Ethel Louise (Nordby) Hetman, whom he married March 24, 1956 in The Chapel at Valley Forge, PA.

Born at home in Reading, January 22, 1931, he was a son of the late Alexander, Sr., and Michaelena (Neuheimer) Hetman.

He was a 1949 graduate of Reading High School.

Alex was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War, serving four years as a ship fitter welder. He was stationed on the USS Gainard (DD706), a destroyer that was classified experimental and detached from the 6th fleet. They tested new equipment like gunnery radar and sonar. Alex was honorably discharged as a second class metal smith and a diver.

He was employed as a driver for United Parcel Service, retiring after 38 years.

Alex was an avid fisherman, loved camping and taking his boat on the Delaware Bay. He also enjoyed dancing to the music of the Big Bands.

He was a member of Teamsters Local #429, The American Legion Post 622, Central (Laureldale) Fire Company Beneficial Association and Laureldale Athletic Association.

Alex is survived by a son Eric Scott, husband of Constance Ann (Johnson) Hetman of Alsace Township and a daughter Karen Marie (Hetman), wife of David Richard Bunn of Wyomissing.

He was the loving grandfather to four grandchildren, Phillip Daniel and Carlee Anna Hetman; Caitlin Diana and Colin Alexander Bunn.

Other survivors include three nieces: Alexis (Hetman) Hyneman, Ann (Mikos) Dougherty and Jane (Mikos) Marquette.

Alex was predeceased by a brother Joseph Hetman in 1992, a sister Marie Hetman in 1926 and an infant brother Rudolph Hetman in 1918.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale is in charge of arrangements.
