Alexander Campbell, Jr., 83, of Reading, died May 31, 2011, in Reading Hospital.

He was the husband of Mary E. (Ulrich) Campbell, the love of his life. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

Born in Newark, N.J., he was the son of the late Alexander, Sr. and Barbara (Watson) Campbell.

He was a graduate of Englewood High School, Englewood, NJ in 1946 and Kutztown State Teacher's College with a degree in Secondary Education in 1951. Alexander continued his education at Temple University earning his Master's Degree in Education in 1964; he attended Lehigh University for School Psychology.

His first job was as an underwriter at American Casualty for two years before teaching.

Alexander was a teacher for 22 years, working for Boyertown, West Reading, Maple Shade and Exeter School Districts. While teaching at West Reading School, he was the head football coach for 11 years and assistant basketball coach for 2 years. He also was the assistant football coach at Boyertown School District from 1953-1955. Following his secondary education career, he worked at Albright College where he was the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, and served as the college's Sports Information Director.

He was an active member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ, where he was a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, David J., Reading; his daughter, Louise E., wife of David A. Ludwig, Cumru Township; six grandchildren, Jennifer A. (Campbell) McIntosh, Rebecca A. Campbell, Lauren E. and Tara C. Ludwig, Gabrielle J. and Meghann P. Campbell and four great-grandchildren, Madeline A., Alex J., Isabelle A.. and Elaina G.

He was predeceased by his son, Bruce A. Campbell on September 1, 2001.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
