Albert E. Burkhart

Albert Elijah "Hap" Burkhart, 90, of Ontelaunee Township died December 29, 2010 at Kutztown Manor.

He was the husband of Bernice Frances (Homan) Burkhart who died in 2002.

Born January 24, 1920 in Reading, he was a son of the late John D. and Ida (Shearer) Burkhart.

Albert served in the U.S. Navy as a sailor on diesel submarines for 20 years, retiring in 1972.

Albert enjoyed "chucking".

Surviving are two children: Michael A. Burkhart of Ontelaunee Township and Sally L. (Burkhart), husband of Clifford Ernst of Ruscombmanor Township.

Other survivors include two grandchildren: Melissa Lyn Burkhart of Reading and Austin L. Ernst of Ruscombmanor Township.

Albert was predeceased by a brother, John and seven sisters, Sally, Arlene, Peggy, Esther, Mary, Alice and Elsie.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 12 p.m. at Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services in the funeral home. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.
